The Division of General Surgery at Assaf Harofeh annually performs about 3500 surgeries in all fields of surgery including: thyroid and parathyroid, breast and breast reconstruction, surgeries of the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, large intestine and rectum, bariatric surgery for obesity treatment Many of the surgeries are performed using laparoscopic techniques.
A Trauma Unit operates within the General Surgery Division. This Unit encompasses treatment for all cases of trauma brought to the Medical Center as well as the specialty clinics with regards to the variety of medical fields aforementioned.
Within the framework of the General Surgery Division research is conducted on a variety of subjects: Parathyroidectomy, quick PTH, cancer of the large intestine and the rectum, stomach cancer, pelvic trauma, breast cancer, development of an algorithm to detect inflammation of the appendix, as well as many other studies.
Department of Thoracic Surgery

Board certified in cardiothoracic surgery with additional specialization in chest surgery from the General Hospital of Toronto, Canada.
The Department of Thoracic Surgery deals with the diagnosis and treatment of lung and chest diseases and injuries, surgical excision of both benign and malignant tumors in the lungs, esophagus, pharynx and mediastinum. Also treated are diseases that involve the walls of the chest cavity (tumors on the ribs and on the intercostal muscles).
All of the necessary imaging tests and diagnoses are performed in the Department, starting with biopsy of the organ through surgical treatment, with the objective to achieve complete cure. The doctors in the Department have undergone advanced training in the United States in the field of thoracoscopic technology - the most advanced technology of its kind The Department is one of the few Israeli medical centers that use this technology. The thoracoscopic technique facilitates swift recovery. This advanced surgical approach allows operations to be performed on patients suffering from advanced stages of lung cancer who have previously been rejected due to the complexity of their disease. The treatment is given in full collaboration with the Oncology Institute at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.
The physicians of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Assaf Harofeh are the Israeli pioneers in the performance of lung volume reduction surgery (LVR5). This operation is intended for patients suffering from emphysema and those scheduled for lung transplant.
