Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Chairperson: Prof. Arie Herman
Board certified in gynecology and obstetrics. Graduated cum laude from the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. Holds a masters degree in Health Systems Management from the Recanati School for Business Management Tel Aviv University. In 1998 was appointed as Clinical Associate Professor at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.
The Division provides the full spectrum of professional treatments in gynecology, obstetrics and fertility.

General Gynecology

Department Head: Prof. David Schneider
Board certified in gynecology and obstetrics.

Head of the Gyno-Oncological Unit  and the Gynecology Department of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Division.
Member of the Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. Associate Clinical Professor since 2001.

Procedures performed in the Department:

IVF - In Vitro Fertilization

Unit Head: Prof. Rafael Ron-El
Board certified In fertility, obstetrics and gynecology. Advanced studies at the Units for In-vitro Fertilization in Austria, Germany, and  at the world's leading unit in the field in Brussels. Served as the Chairperson of the Israeli
Society for the Study of Fertility. Full Professor at the 5ackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.

The Fertility and In-vitro Fertilization (IVF) Unit founded at Assaf Harofeh in 1988, is very successful Each year about 1200 treatment cycles (including micromanipulation) are performed with a success rate of 35-40% pregnancies. The Unit includes 8 preparation and recovery beds and an adjacent operating theater. Treatments include: freezing of embryos and blastocysts, laser penetration of the walls, testicular surgery to extract sperm, pre-lmplantatlon genetic testing of embryos prior to returning them to the womb (PGD) to detect genetic diseases, etc.
The Unit also operates a Women's Fertility Clinic, a 5terility Institute for men to clarify and treat sperm deficiencies, and sperm bank services. The Unit is active academically in basic and clinical studies and takes part In Joint studies with the Tel Aviv University, the Weizmann Institute, the Volcanic Institute and with the Centre for In-Vitro Fertilization and Reproductive Medicine in Brussels.


Male Sterility Institute and Sperm Bank

The Male Sterility Institute treats patients who suffer from sterility (a phenomenon that encompasses more than 50% of fertility problems). Sperm testing is performed In an advanced laboratory including morphological testing by the Kruger method, tests for antibodies in sperm, and sperm mobility in cervical mucus. The Institute performs sperm embellishment and intra uterine insemination, and when necessary prepares couples for in-vitro fertilization. Another area is storage of sperm prior to chemotherapy. Sperm Is kept frozen prior to chemotherapy treatments that could damage sperm production. This approach allows men who were previously considered to be sterile to have a child The success rate of achieving pregnancy and subsequent birth is 50%!

Sperm Bank

One of the largest and most prominent sperm banks that sets the benchmark in Israel. The sperm bank was chosen and approved for operation by the Ministry of Health at the beginning of the 1990s and recently qualified for the I50

Standard
The bank serves both men suffering from sperm deficiency, and a growing population of female single parents and lesbians who warrant sperm donation. The bank operates according to the standards of the Ministry of Health that were Integrated In cooperation with Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. The bank freezes donations by Israeli student sperm donors, imports sperm of non-Jews from the United States for single-parent mothers who wish to have sperm from a known donor and for the religious population in Israel - in accordance with Jewish religious laws.
